What's in a name? Mile Marker Advisors was chosen for three primary reasons:
- Mile: Every business is on a journey.
- Marker: Knowing what mile you are currently experiencing and what mile is next is critical. Celebrate the victories. Don't repeat mistakes of the past.
- Advisors: We all have decisions to make every day - the proverbial "fork in the road." We all need trusted guides to help us along our journey.
Why we started? We were approached consistently throughout our professional career by business owners and leaders to help them navigate the current business mile they were experiencing. Much of this happened outside of our "daytime" job, and all of it was gratis. We experienced great joy in helping these leaders (who we call our neighbors - more on why later). We saw their businesses thrive, their personal lives managed, and their community impact heightened as we worked together. We helped our neighbors meet their objectives, and in return, we grew in our knowledge and ability to serve each other well. Because of these experiences throughout much of our professional career, we began dreaming about a new way of professional service.
What sets us apart? Our level of service and work product is best represented by two underlying principles: serving our colleagues and the Owner. We define our colleague as any entity other than us. We serve the Owner by putting our colleague’s interest above our own. If we serve the Owner, but forgo our colleague’s interest, then we risk tainting the reputation of the Owner. If we serve our colleague, but forgo our obligations to the Owner, then we have failed at our job. Therefore, the highest benefit we can provide the Owner is by serving them while serving our colleagues.
Our work ethic is best illustrated in a timeless parable of a business owner and their fiduciary agents. The business owner delegated responsibilities to each of the agents. It was the agent’s duty to steward responsibilities entrusted to them in a way that maximized benefit for the business owner while caring for their neighbor. Upon reckoning the accounts among the agents, the agent who maximized the benefit for the Owner received great reward and recognition.
